Bitcoin Steadies Near $54K After Biggest Drop in a Month
Bitcoin stabilized near $54,000 early Tuesday after posting its worst daily loss in almost a month.
- Bitcoin (BTC) was trading around $54,680 as of 12:50 UTC (8:50 p.m. ET), after falling late Monday to around $53,715, the lowest since March 16.
- The largest cryptocurrency fell 5.8% over the previous 24 hours, for its largest daily decline since Feb. 23, according to Bitstamp exchange data. Bitcoin’s 24-hour range: $53,795.15-$58,407.62 (CoinDesk 20).
- BTC’s 4-hour chart shows seller volume has been building alongside a falling price, a bearish signal for market technicians.
The drop below $55,000 comes as cryptocurrency fund inflows have been on the decline, down by roughly 58% to $99 million last week.
Trading volume was also strong from sellers on Monday, with the largest 4-hour print by the bears in over a week.
Ki Young Ju, CEO of the South Korea analysis firm CryptoQuant, says blockchain data show there’s “not enough buying power from stablecoins and U.S. dollar spot inflows” to drive prices vastly higher.
It could take some time before bitcoin enjoys another leg up, Ju said: “What’s clear is that we won’t see a huge surge like 20%.”

Billionaire Investor Howard Marks Warming to Bitcoin
Howard Marks, co-founder of alternative investment manager Oaktree Capital, says he has reconsidered his previous “dismissive” stance on bitcoin (BTC, +3.28%). The investor, who is worth $2.1 billion according to Forbes, previously said in a 2017 memo that cryptocurrency was “an unfounded fad.” The comment was “a knee-jerk reaction without information,” Marks conceded in a video interview with the Korea Economic Daily on Monday. While he’d previously considered bitcoin to have no intrinsic value, he said that “there are plenty of things that people want and value highly that have no intrinsic value. How about a…

If Bitcoin Starts Closing Below the 50-Day SMA It May Mean Deeper Pullback Ahead
Bitcoin fell sharply on Sunday, dipping well below the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) support for the first time in six months. While the decline looks typical of a bull market correction, it could be extended further if prices find acceptance under the 50-day SMA, according to one analyst. “The loss of [bullish] momentum is only short-term in nature, but we would view consecutive closes below the 50-day SMA as a reason to move to the sidelines,” Katie Stockton, technical analyst and managing partner of Fairlead Strategies, told CoinDesk in…

Anchor Begins Countdown to Launch of Bank-Beating DeFi Savings Account
Anchor, the much-anticipated cryptocurrency savings account from the team at Terraform Labs, appears to be finally nearing a go-live date, based on a countdown clock on its website. Under the plan announced last summer, Anchor would allow users to hold Terraform’s UST stablecoin, pegged to the U.S. dollar, and earn returns that consistently outpace the annual percentage yield (APY) of savings accounts at U.S. banks. Anchor represents a significant new decentralized finance application independent of Ethereum (where most of the DeFi action takes place): a basic savings account that should be more…

Money Reimagined: NFTs Can Learn From DeFi’s Growth
This week, you could be forgiven for thinking bitcoin has ceded ground at the epicenter of the crypto zeitgeist to non-fungible tokens (NFT). Bitcoin’s price dropped to its lowest level since March 8, after failing to consolidate gains made on yet another Elon Musk tweet. Meanwhile, NFT stories were everywhere again. Another Beeple art piece sold for $6 million to raise funds for the Open Earth Foundation’s efforts to fight climate change, and both The New York Times and Time Magazine announced sales of their own NFTs. It’s also true that bitcoin continues to attract attention in financial troubled…
